Had Alec had more time, been able to guess more precisely when Richard was going to move, he might have tried to compensate for the fall, and while that would keep him from being quite so surprised to it, he was awkward and ungraceful enough that it would likely have caused more difficult than help.
As it was, there was a moment of falling and then Richard's smooth catch. Alec had the opportunity to feel Richard's body solid underneath his, and he grunted at the comfort of it, pressing himself down and snaking his legs through Richard's.
"I think I could be yet more comfortable here, if you were so inclined."
Hard to imagine, and yet Alec has the strength of experience with Richard to rely on.
